Rexam Plays Leading Role In Aluminium Can Recycling

Rexam's North American beverage can (BCNA) plants are playing a leading role in local community aluminium can recycling efforts. By teaming with their local communities, the BCNA network collected a total of nearly 3 million lbs (c 1,350 tonnes) of aluminium cans during a six week company and industry wide contest leading up to America's Recycle Day on 15 November 2009.

Tiny Marine Gribbles can Produce Liquid Biofuels from Wood

Scientists at the BBSRC Sustainable Bioenergy Centre are analyzing how miniature marine gribble isopods eat and digest wood that is supposedly indigestible. These wood-eating creatures destroy docks and wooden piers in coastal regions and the wooden components aboard ships, thus becoming a seafarer’s nightmare. The scientists analyzed gribble gut genes and understood that the digestive systems of these creatures contain enzymes that are capable of indicating a solution for converting straw and wood into liquid biofuels.

Green Building Survey Throws up Surprising Results

A majority of green building industry professionals in the US jointly surveyed by the Green Building Insider, Allen Matkins, and the Constructive Technologies Group (CTG) have firmly endorsed their support for green building projects despite the recession, owing to their advantages such as savings in energy and operational expenses. Over 1,600 construction and design professionals across the US participated in the Fourth Annual Green Building Survey, which analyzed present-day attitudes on trends, expenses, construction, certification processes, and risks related to green building projects.

Department of Energy Awards Blanket Purchase Agreement to SAIC for Biomass Program

The Golden Field Office and Department of Energy (DOE) has granted a blanket purchase agreement to R.W. Beck, a 100% subsidiary of Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) to support the Biomass Program of The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. The blanket purchase agreement with a ceiling of $21 million expires on 30th September 2015.
