Breakthrough Solar Encapsulant Increases Efficiency of Solar Modules

Saflex, a business unit of Solutia, is launching a breakthrough solar encapsulant that helps increase the efficiency of the solar module while reducing material usage. The new product, called Saflex(R) Radiant White PA27, represents a new class of value-added encapsulants and is based on collaboration between Oerlikon Solar and Saflex to rapidly drive thin film PV technology towards grid parity.

Greenlight Programme Wins Award for Reducing Energy Consumption for Lighting by 85 Per Cent

These awards, launched by the European Commission in 2000 and 2005 respectively, promote the reduction of energy consumption by public and private organisations on a voluntary basis. One of the 12 award winners in the 2010 edition of the GreenLight programme is Dagda town council in Latvia, which reduced its energy consumption in lighting by 85% after joining the initiative in 2007.

First Step Towards Generating Bioelectricity without Producing Carbon Dioxide

In an electrifying first, Stanford scientists have plugged in to algae cells and harnessed a tiny electric current. They found it at the very source of energy production - photosynthesis, a plant's method of converting sunlight to chemical energy. It may be a first step toward generating "high efficiency" bioelectricity that doesn't give off carbon dioxide as a byproduct, the researchers say.
